Geography
Meet the Geography Department!

BGE
The Geography BGE course is aimed at studying unique aspects of the world around us- not just studying maps! Whether it is Empty Lands in S1, the nature and impacts of Earth Forces in S2 or the impacts of ice on Scottish landscapes in S3, our Geography course is designed to introduce pupils to the amazing planet we live on, its powers and its people in countries different from our own. Pupils have the opportunity to build on previous skills and knowledge and gain new insights. Whether it's researching animals in the tundra, creating volcano models, working as a team to cope after a natural disaster or predicting tomorrow’s weather pupils will gain the skills necessary for life, learning and work.
National 5
National 5 Geography allows pupils to develop an understanding of the human world, along with previous knowledge on the physical world. Pupils are encouraged to compare and contrast urban and rural environments between the developed and developing worlds. Population studies allows an understanding of the shape of societies and how these can be changed. Finally, global issues invites pupils to understand health issues and destruction of natural regions, encouraging problem solving and analytical skills.

Higher
National 6 Geography encourages pupils to build on their knowledge from the National 5 course. It is designed to challenge pupil’s previous knowledge and skills and invite them to discover more about the world we live in. Whether it is understanding the workings of the hydrological cycle and investigating the characteristics of soil profiles in the Physical Unit, comparing and contrasting population structures and analysing changes in urban and rural environments in developed and developing countries in the Human Unit or exploring strategies implemented to tackle development and health issues and evaluating possible solutions to climate change in the Global Issues Unit, pupils will be encouraged to develop their higher order thinking skills.
