Welcome to the Business Education Department webpage - we provide a broad general education (BGE) to learners in junior school and offer a suite of business courses in the senior phase,
Namely:
Accounting
Administration & IT
Business & Business Management
Business touches so many aspects of our lives – studying it will develop knowledge and skills that will help students to succeed in learning, life and work.

Resources & Support
Resources
Portico - Staff and pupils can access personal school files and department resources when away from school.
Glow - Access Google Classroom and Apps by logging into your Glow account.
Users can receive alerts/reminders, download assignments and submit completed work directly to teachers to receive online feedback; apps can be used on mobile and desktop devices, both inside and out with school.
Free software!!! Staff and pupils can download the following software onto home devices completely free of charge:
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher and more) – download from your Glow account onto your phone, tablet, laptop and/or desktop computer.
- Serif Suite (PagePlus, PhotoPlus, MoviePlus, DrawPlus, WebPlus) – speak to ? for more information on accessing and downloading the required software.
Support
Teachers will provide information on additional support that is available at various times of the year such as supported study sessions and Easter Study school.
Pupils are encouraged to speak to teachers if they feel they need further assistance with classwork and/or homework beyond that which is already provided.
BGE Business
S1/S2 pupils attend BGE Business one period per week where they undertake activities to develop their digital literacy skills using software and communication packages
Such as:
- Word processing (MS Word)
- Presentation software (MS PowerPoint)
- Spreadsheet (MS Excel)
- Database (MS Access)
- Email and Ediary (MS Outlook)
- Internet and school intranet
Topics explored throughout S1/S2 include:
- All About Me
- Solving Crimes using software
- Disney Trip (combined technology & literacy task)
- Basic Economics
- Role of Entrepreneurs
- Marketing
Pupils can choose to deepen their knowledge of business in the senior phase by choosing Accounting, Administration & IT or Business Management – each discrete course is sufficiently different to merit taking all 3 should a pupil wish to do so!
The BGE course is currently under review and will be refreshed to take cognisance of the newly revised Curriculum for Excellence Technologies Experiences & Outcomes and Benchmarks.
Accounting
We currently offer this course at:
Higher level – to senior pupils in S5/6 only
Even if you are not planning a career in accounting, this subject helps to improve personal effectiveness by developing the ability to think logically, work accurately, make decisions and solve problems. The course helps to prepare you to meet the demands of the modern world, whether you are considering making financial investments, running your own business or improving the management of your personal finances.

Administration & IT (AIT)
Digital technologies are increasingly impacting upon the ways we communicate, individually and in business. This course will serve you well in your day-to-day life, as well as preparing you more thoroughly for college/university and for entering the world of work.
Using industry standard software, you will develop digital skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, databases and desktop publishing; develop the ability to use the internet and e-mail for effective communication and investigation. Studying AIT will also enhance your understanding of the importance of good customer care and will explore key workplace legislation that impacts on a business.

Business & Business Management
Studying Business will develop your enterprising skills by taking part in realistic business activities which are challenging, motivating and inspiring. You will gain an insight into areas such as market research, branding and promotion as well as operations and how digital technology is used effectively in business. It will improve your awareness of finance and the importance of motivation and employment legislation in recruiting and retaining staff.

PATHWAYS
BGE Business – pupils can choose to deepen their knowledge of business in the senior phase by choosing to study for National Qualifications in:
Accounting
Administration & IT
Business Management
Each course is:
- Offered at National 4, 5 and Higher, with the exception of Accounting which is currently only offered to S5/6 pupils at Higher level
- Sufficiently different to merit taking all 3 in senior phase should a pupil wish to do so!
Completion of any Business course may lead to opportunities to continue your studies at University or College or to undertake training or employment.
