History

Welcome to the UGS History Department webpage. The History Department staff are:

Miss MacIntyre

Miss Young

Mr Burns

The History Department can be found in Wing B, Floor 1.

History is a vital subject in the curriculum, everyone is a product of history and having a knowledge of the past results in pupils becoming responsible citizens. History is all about studying evidence from the past and developing skills to critically analyse and draw conclusions about past societies. Pupils will use a number of different methods and technologies to understand the past in their time in the History Department.

BGE

S1 History

Scottish Wars of Independence

S2 History

S3 History

The Great War

Pupils will work to develop the skills to become a successful Historian. This will include analysing a wide variety of source material of differing complexity, to come to a reasoned conclusion on a historical period. As the students move throughout their Broad General Education (BGE) experience, pupils will experience a wide variety of source material and their complexity of judgement will increase with their skill set. Overall we aim that all pupils will become engaged in the lessons and enjoy learning about the past, as they begin to understand how the past shapes our understanding of the modern world.

In the senior phase pupils will develop the skill set they have developed in their BGE phase of critical analysis and interpretation to apply this to their National examinations. Pupils will work to the structure of the SQA structured courses and complete a number of class assessments to gain their National qualification in History. Pupils will also be encouraged to develop skills of independent learning and research, through the completion of ‘Assignments’ which contribute to their National 5 and higher overall award.
